Re-Contouring Teeth

What Is Re-contouring?

Dental re-contouring in Farmersville and Van Alstyne, Texas, involves the removal of small amounts of tooth enamel. The purpose is to change the length, shape or surface contours of a tooth. This is a relatively quick and painless procedure. It is also called tooth reshaping, or odontoplasty.

What It’s Used For:

Re-contouring is one of the most conservative cosmetic procedures. It is an effective way to correct minor imperfections. It can improve overall dental health by removing minor crevices or overlaps where plaque or tartar can build up.

However, re-contouring is not a substitute for porcelain veneers or cosmetic bonding. Re-contouring probably might not be the best treatment if your teeth have a major imperfection such as a deep chip or fracture.

You should understand what re-contouring can and can’t do for you so you have realistic expectations. Your dentist may show you before-and-after photographs of other patients. This will allow you to see exactly what sorts of improvements are possible. Sometimes, re-contouring can’t completely fix tooth imperfections. Your dentist may combine the treatment with cosmetic bonding. In this procedure, a composite resin is used to repair or restore fractures, chips or cavities. Re-contouring doesn’t affect the living pulp or dentin of the tooth. For this reason, it usually can be done without anesthetic.

Cosmetic Bonding

What Is Cosmetic Bonding?

Dental bonding is a procedure that uses a tooth-colored composite resin to repair a tooth. Bonding can be used on teeth that are decayed, chipped, broken or discolored. The procedure is known as bonding because the material bonds to the tooth. Unlike porcelain veneers, dental bonding in Farmersville and Van Alstyne Texas, can be done in a single visit. Porcelain veneers are another way to repair some teeth, they are made in a laboratory and require a customized impression (mold) to achieve a proper fit.

What It’s Used For:

Bonding is one of the easiest and least costly cosmetic dental treatments. The resin used in bonding can be shaped and polished to match the other teeth. Most often, bonding is used by Our Dentists to improve the appearance of discolored or chipped tooth. It also can be used to:

  • Close spaces between teeth
  • Make teeth look longer
  • Change the shape or color of teeth
  • Sometimes, bonding is used to protect a portion of the tooth’s root that has been exposed when gums recede.

Porcelain Veneers

What are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are bonded to the front parts of teeth. They cover your teeth in a similar way that an artificial fingernail covers a nail. Veneers can be used as a conservative way to improve the look of your teeth without the need of altering the entire tooth to place a crown. Porcelain veneers look like natural teeth and they are very resistant to stains compared to their cosmetic bonding counterparts.

What It’s Used For:

Dental veneers in in Farmersville and Van Alstyne, Texas, are used to correct cosmetic defects on teeth and/or to correct the way that teeth come together. Cosmetic problems that can be corrected with veneers include:

  • Teeth that are slightly crooked or stained but in good shape may benefit from Veneers or Clear Correct
  • Chipped teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Teeth that are different lengths

In the past, the only way to correct these or other imperfections was to cover the entire tooth with a porcelain crown, which is a more invasive, but sometimes necessary procedure.

Tooth Whitening

You don’t have to be born with perfectly white teeth to have a bright new smile. Tooth whitening in Farmersville and Van Alstyne, Texas, or bleaching, can usually erase years of staining and/or discoloration. At Harvest Dental we offer two ways to whiten your teeth: Take home whitening kit or In-office whitening procedure.

Professional whitening done in-office can make your teeth up to seven shades whiter.

In-Office Whitening Procedure:

  • We start by screening you to see if whitening is appropriate for your individual circumstance. Most patients are great candidates for whitening, but unfortunately, whitening is not for everyone.
  • Before the whitening process, we will find the current shade of your teeth with the aid of a shade guide.
  • We then take impressions of your upper and lower teeth so we can make you a set of take home bleaching trays. We do this while you are undergoing the in-office treatment.
  • Next we place a barrier between your gums and teeth. This temporary “dam” protects your gums while you have the bleach on your teeth.
  • After the dam has been safely placed, we will apply a coat of bleach on your teeth.
  • We let this bleach sit on your teeth according to the manufactures recommended time. Then we thoroughly rinse your teeth with water.
  • Sometimes we may have to repeat the process to get the results you want.
  • After we completed the treatment, we will use the shade guide to show you the amazing difference in your teeth’s color.
  • Before you leave we will show you how to use your take home bleaching trays. These can be used to “touch up” and brighten your smile if the whitening has faded.

Take-home whitening kit:

  • We start by screening you to see if whitening is appropriate for your individual circumstance. Most patients are great candidates for whitening, but unfortunately, whitening may not work for everyone.
  • Before the whitening process, we will find the current shade of your teeth with the aid of a shade guide.
  • We then take impressions of your upper and lower teeth so we can make you a set of take home bleaching trays.
  • Usually you will pick these up the next day, and a team member will show you how to use the product correctly.
  • After the whitening process, you can use the provided shade guide that is in your home-kit to see the difference in color of your teeth. It’s amazing how much they change!
